Consent: What does it mean?

Informed consent has legal and clinical practice implications. Forensic Nurses provide care to a diverse patient population and must consider professional and legal implications when obtaining informed consent for patients that may have cognitive impairment, are recognized as minors in the state and/or may be a suspect in a criminal case. It is imperative that clinicians understand that every patient and or suspect has the right to be informed in a way that is developmentally and linguistically appropriate and that the patient is encouraged to ask clarifying questions. Assent should be sought from children who are by jurisdictional definition too young to grant informed consent for care.
